Obituary

Sylvester Lesley Harry Sr., known as Mose Harry, was born on June 10, 1938 in Angie, the sixth of 12 children. He departed this life Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011. He joined the Wesley Ray United Methodist Church at an early age and attended worship on a regular basis with his family. He remained a member of the church until his death. He was educated in the Washington Parish School System at Wesley Ray High School in Angie. After graduating from high school, he moved to New Orleans, where he attended Sidney Collier School of Business. He worked various jobs in New Orleans, including E. B. Ludwig Construction Company. He later moved back to Angie and was employed at Crown-Zellerbach. He later attended Sullivan VoTech in Bogalusa, where he earned a certificate as a millwright. He remained employed at the mill until he suffered a stroke in 1994 and retired. Sylvester enjoyed farming while living in Angie. He found pleasure in raising cows and hogs, as well as growing crops such as peas, corn, okra, sugar cane, homemade syrup, and his favorite, Texas red peanuts. He was a very caring person and did whatever he could to help those who needed him. He leaves to cherish his memories 10 children: Levon (Carolyn) Harry Sr. of Varnado, Asychileus (Slack) Harry of Angie, Sheila (Cori Sr.) Harris of Houston, Texas, Sylvester L. Harry Jr. of Sayreville, N.J., Sonya Rena Pack of Varnado, Lesley D. McKinley of Angie, Alice Faye (Melvin) Jones of Virginia Beach, Va., Deidra (Leo) Sharp of Chesapeake, Va., Shaliza McKinley of Atlanta, Ga. and Ricky Owens of Bogalusa;
three sisters, Rosa Lee White and Emma Harry, both of Angie, and Annie (Willie) Bishop of New Orleans; four brothers, Leroy (Thelma) Harry of Benton, Earnest (Gladys) Harry Sr. of Angie, Cleotha (Charlene) Harry of New Orleans and Lt. Col. (Ret.) William (Dorothy) Harry of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a grandson he raised, DeAndre (Keely) McKinley; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; the mothers of his children, Louveina McKinley, Betty Adams and Mamie L. Harry; a godson, Kenyon HoImes of Atlanta; two nephews he helped to raise, Rev. Anthony (Angela) Newkirk and Terry (Michelle) Owens; a niece, Lunelia Newkirk; two special friends, Tony Owens and Dwight Morris; and host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Jason and Lottie Riley Harry; siblings and spouses, Rovella Harry (Luther Sr.) Martin, Laura Harry (Orell) Brown, Tillie Harry and Christine Magee. He was also preceded by one child, Henry Joseph Harry.
