Dorothy Burrell Young was born as the second daughter to proud parents, the Late Ellis and Julie Burrell. Dorothy attended Wesley Ray and obtained her earliest formal education. After graduating high school, she attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA and obtained a Bachelor's Degree. While attending college, Dorothy became a licensed beautician, and had a large following of loyal patrons. She would attend college all week and come home Friday evenings. She would then immediately go to her little shop that had been built for her. She would make women feel beautiful all Friday evening and all day and night on Saturday. It was her sheer delight to offer this service. Dorothy continued her educational pursuits and obtained a Master's Degree Plus, and was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree.
For Dorothy, this was one of her finest moments, being given the opportunity to serve in leadership in the place that had been her starting place for what would be a lifetime in education. Dorothy served as Vice-Principal at Pine Elementary School for several years. She was loved and appreciated by all who had the opportunity to work with her. When she came to Wesley Ray as Principal in charge, she brought the same humility and love and care for people with her that had served her well in every other setting.
Dorothy's community spirit led her to serve in many organizations and groups beyond the church and school. She was currently serving as President of the Louisiana Reading Association, as well as President of the Board of Adapt Inc. Dorothy was deeply committed and involved in: Habitat for Humanity, CASA, Varnado Recreation Center, Concerned Citizens, the Varnado/Angie Community Prayer Band, and many, many more organizations. Dorothy had a very strong faith, as well as a deep love for God, which showed up in her generosity of time, energy and resources she offered to anyone she met and everyone who asked.
Dorothy was preceded in death by: Father, Ellis Burrell, Sr.; Mother, Julie Mae Peters Burrell; Sister, Juanita Smith; Granddaughter, Alea Young. She leaves to cherish her life and legacy her: Husband, Climel Young; Daughter, Rosalind Young; Sons, Stanley, Climel, Jr. and Lawrence (Karen). From Dorothy's offspring, there are 13grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She also leaves three sisters: Earnestine Bell, Clotial Jackson (John) and Clemetine Morris, her only brother, Ellis Jr. (Louise), and leaves a very devoted and loyal god-sister, Barbara L. Weary. Dorothy also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles who will have fond memories of her for days to come.
